Moravian College announces 2020 BASD Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship Winners

Two Students from Freedom and Liberty High Schools to receive 4-year full-tuition scholarships to Moravian College

BETHLEHEM, PA, June 11, 2020: Today, Moravian College announced the two winners of the 2020 BASD Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship. Started in 2016, the BASD Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship provides 4 year, full-tuition scholarships to one student from Freedom High School and one from Liberty High School, both located in Bethlehem, PA.  Damian Almonte, a graduating senior at Freedom High School and Amanda Dougherty, a graduating senior at Liberty High School, were the students chosen by a panel, which includes representatives from their respective high schools and Moravian College. 


鈥淥nce again, two outstanding students from Freedom and Liberty High Schools have been selected for the Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship,鈥 said Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian College.  鈥淲e鈥檙e confident they鈥檒l follow in the footsteps of the scholarship鈥檚 previous winners and have a great experience at Moravian and not only excel academically, but get involved in campus and life and make their mark on the community.鈥

Damian Almonte earned a GPA of 3.5 at Freedom, which ranks him 171 out of 464 students at Freedom and has indicated he wants to major in Secondary Education at Moravian. Almonte was also President of GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), Student Director of the Freedom High School Patriot Choir and had many Moravian alumni as teachers during his time in high school.

Amanda Dougherty earned a GPA of 4.0, which ranks her 92 out of 614 students at Liberty and she has expressed interest in majoring in Health Sciences at Moravian and pursuing a career in the Nutrition field. Dougherty is also a self-taught piano player, learning on a piano she bought herself and was an accompanist for Liberty High School's Choir. In addition, Dougherty was a cheerleader for a competitive community squad. 

鈥淭his scholarship represents Moravian College鈥檚 generosity and commitment to the students and families of BASD,鈥 said Dr. Joseph Roy, superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District. 鈥淒amian and Amanda will, in turn, quickly become valuable members of the Moravian community.鈥
