Moravian College Magazine - Summer 2019

VIA LUCIS: How the Moravian College experience transforms first-generation students

This magazine is dedicated to a history all of us hold dear—educating first-generation students.

Bishop John Amos Comenius set forth our educational mission and vision when he declared that "not the children of the rich or of the powerful only, but of all alike, boys and girls, both noble and ignoble, rich and poor, in all cities and towns, villages and hamlets, should be sent to school."

From the college's historic roots as being the first to educate women, we have chosen to educate those whom others choose not to educate.

The Corpora Legacy

Emigrating from a tiny village in Sicily, Santa and Vincenzo Corpora came to America in pursuit of a dream that their children would one day become the first to attend college.

Those children—Santa, Pat, and Maria—chose Moravian. Today, they help make a 91¿´Æ¬ education possible for other first- and second-generation immigrants.
